IIUM MEDICAL CENTRE
The International Islamic University Malaysia Medical Centre or IIUM Medical Centre is a Shari'ah compliant hospital which provides services in accordance to Shari'ah principles on terms of design, operation, facilities, and financial system.
The medical facilities and services are equipped with well-trained staff with halal healthcare products to assist patients and visitors to fulfill their religious obligations. Towards this end, the Shari'ah Compliance Organization structure will be established as an important body to regulate and govern the IIUM Medical Centre.
Being the first teaching hospital to adopt Shari'ah principles, it is inevitable for the IIUM Medical Centre to face greater challenges, particularly related to drugs dispensary and medical personnel-patient relationships of different gender because the guidelines and policies would be different from other practices at other hospitals.
The University authority is confident that the Shari'ah compliant IIUM Medical Centres in line with the vision of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) towards the Islamisation of Knowledge, and its implementation is supported by IIUM medical specialists. surgeons, pharmacists, nurses, allied health professionals, experts in fiqh and usul fiqh, muamalat, quality management personnel and experienced lawyers, with the ultimate aim of serving the Ummah.
In 2010, the Prime Minister, Dato Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak announced the budget for the establishment of IIUM Medical Centre during his budget speech. All relevant federal and state agencies were mobilized in the efforts to realize the idea, and in early 2011, the agreement was finalized between AZRB, the Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Health and IIUM to build the Centre which cost about RM 412 million.
The IIUM Medical Centre was built based on the Private Funding Initiative (PFI) with a 25-year concession agreement, on 27.8 acres of land, equipped with 350 beds for inpatients, and supported by more than 133 medical specialists. The IIUM Medical Centre also includes the development of an undergraduate and postgraduate teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre, complementing the medical and allied health faculty provisions. Furthermore, IIUM Medical Centre is also equipped with sophisticated medical technology and equipment such as MRI scanners, CT scan, digital radiographs and also a heart scanner.
On 12th December, 2012, the Foundation Laying Ceremony was held and officiated by His Royal Highness, the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah, the constitutional Head of the International Islamic University Malaysia. The ceremony marked the beginning of the construction of the IIUM Medical Centre. On 9th May, 2016 the building of the IIUM Medical Centre was handed over to IIUM. This success is the outcome of the painstaking task and well-coordinated efforts by IIUM and all relevant agencies.
The opening ceremony of IIUM Medical Centre wa held on 20 July, 2016. It was officiated by the constituional head of IIUM himself, His Royal Highness, the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah accompanied by the Sultanah Kalsom. Also present during the launching day were Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, IIUM President Tan Sri Dr. Rais Yatim and also IIUM rector Prof Datuk Seri Zaleha Kamaruddin.
