Background

Pharmacognosy is a science that focuses on molecules and involves isolation and determination of the structure of pharmacologically active molecules as well as the study of their biosynthesis, including the enzymes and the genes which are involved. It is extended to a big data analysis to connect between bioactivity, metabolites, and drug sources. Our current performance is indicated as follows.

Background

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a growing public health problem that occurs worldwide and yet there is still no concrete approach in curbing such predicament. The development of related studies especially on pharmacological interventions seems to be decelerated could be due to the lack of interest from the researchers or profit gained from this population. Patients with SUD are more than always received stigmas and negative perceptions form the community they lived in or even from the healthcare practitioners where this population has been associated with violence, crime, misbehaviour and threat to the community that impede healthcare delivery towards them.

Scope of Research Activities

  • Evaluation on the actual burden of SUD disease in our country both for illicit (amphetamine, marijuana, ketum, etc) and prescription drugs.
  • Longitudinal evaluation on the outcomes of current treatment approach (patient, community and national level).
  • Investigation on the effectiveness of methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) program in this country as one of the harm reduction approaches.
  • Identification of possible other treatment approach or strategy in the pipeline to be further developed (eg: PK/PD approach /opioid vaccine).
  • Overviewing, proposing and improving current policy regarding SUD.
  • Identify the potential drug target to treat poly-drug addiction using pharmacological approach.
  • Identify potential compounds in local plants that can be developed to treat drug addiction.

Background

Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) refers to the selection of suitable therapeutic interventions followed by assuring the safe and cost-effective use of medicines. The World Health Organization have identified improved patient safety in healthcare as a priority. Pharmacists, in particular, have a key role in ascertaining the quality of medications used for patients, especially in vulnerable populations and patients with chronic diseases. Our research group is more practice-oriented that covers all aspects of quality use of medicines. The current research involves but not limited to the use of medicines in geriatrics and patients with diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, and psychiatric illness.

Scope of research activities

  1. To assess the quality of use and prescribing of medicines in healthcare settings.
  2. To describe and assess patterns of medication use and prescribing.
  3. To investigate the barriers and facilitators towards quality use of medicines.
  4. To conduct interventional studies to improve the quality of medication use and prescribing in healthcare settings.
  5. To promote and assess the awareness towards medication adherence, medicines information sources and health literacy.
  6. To investigate and assess pharmacists’ competencies, education and training that deemed necessary to perform their role in the quality use of medicines.

Background

Research methodology is the overall plan ‘that shapes our choice and use of particular methods and links them to the desired outcomes’. Qualitative research is complementary in evaluating the in-depth standpoints and diverse opinions of healthcare practitioners on patient safety, patient advocacy and patient centered care. Qualitative research imparts more flexible meaning, generally emerge from stakeholders’ direct experiences either from their daily lives or professional practices.

Scope of research activities

  1. Rigor in Qualitative Research Instrument
  2. Patient- Centered Care through Action Research
  3. Patient Safety through Social Phenomenological Approach
  4. Cultural Competence in Healthcare through Participatory Action Research
  5. Stakeholders Observation on Quality of Life in Patients having Non-communicable Diseases

Background

This proposal aims to seek an approval from Kulliyyah of Pharmacy Board ( IIUM ) for establishment of Toxicology research group. Toxicology is an integrated discipline that focuses on effects of xenobiotics to living creatures and environment. The group core strength will be mechanistic toxicology on natural toxins, commonly used herbs and conventional drugs. The group will employ traditional toxicology techniques as well molecular techniques to elucidate mechanism of toxicities.

Scope of research activities

i. Isolation and characterization of venom and toxins.

ii. Proteomic study of venom and toxins.

iii. Neurotoxicity and cardiotoxicity studies for venom and toxins.

iv. Nephrotoxicity studies of drug-drug, drug-herbal interactions.
