‘Al Liqa’ No. 7 held in conjunction with Merdeka!

The  Special ‘Al Liqa’ ‘Al Shari series No. 7 was held  on 30th August (eve of Merdeka Day)  in conjunction with IIUM’s Merdeka Month celebrations.  The event was held at the Cultural Activity Centre and was attended and observed by nearly 2,000 staff.  The attendees sang the evergreen Jalur Gemilang and Keranamu Malaysia, each one cheerfully waving the national flag with much pride, enthusiasm, and a high degree of patriotisme.   The locals were also joined by about 500 staff from foreign countries currently serving at the IIUM.

In the spirit of the month of Syawal,  IIUM Rector, Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Zaleha Kamaruddin took the opportunity to wish Eid Mubarak to each and everyone present at the CAC  and extends her Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri greetings to both staff and students at the Gombak as well as other branch campuses.   In her speech, she stressed the importance of being guided by the spirit and virtues of  tolerance and forgiveness, important ingredients of character and nation building.

“Few would disagree that Malaysia is truly an amazing country – one which is able to exist in peace and harmony – with a population made up of diverse ethnicities, realistically demonstrating the motto of strength in diversity,” she said.  Verily, it has been said that we are created differently by the Almighty so that we have to work hard to know one another and to co-exist peacefully with one another.  Also, Allah SWT. will simply not change the state and position of a community unless the community takes every effort to change its lot in life, she stressed.

Malaysia is one of the few countries in the world where five major religions on the face of the earth are being professed by each of the ethnic groups: Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism.  We have prudently opted for the policy of inclusion and democratic Islamic principles in that every Malaysian -- irrespective of race and religion and ethnicity -- is entitled to a decent lifestyle, comfortable standard of living, and education.   Malaysia is amazing because of its rich tradition and culture, a nation blessed with natural resources and plentiful bounties of agricultural harvest, said Prof Dr. Zaleha, donning an Assistant Commissioner of Police (Honorary) uniform.

“I am usually left with much awe and admiration for our country and the legacy that our forefathers have left us since Independence that we had achieved since 1957: a united, peaceful and harmonious society against a backdrop of a tapestry or fabric of colorful multiethnic and multi-religious society.  So, let there be no one who will venture to destroy or tear up this beautiful fabric or tapestry of a colorful multiethnic society that we have carefully knitted together in the last five decades or so based on the tenets and principles of Islam”.

While we in Malaysia tend to take peace and harmony for granted, the plight of the Syrian students who are currently studying at IIUM was also highlighted at the event.  IIUM staff, in the spirit of IIUM MyFamily, filled up forms to have part of their September salary deducted in order to contribute towards helping the Syrian students who are currently encountering difficulties receiving money and loan funds from their homeland.

Prof. Dr. Zaleha also reminded attendees that this year [1433 H], going by the Muslim calendar, IIUM will be observing its 30th Anniversary since its establishment.  “This is our 30th year.  It’s time to move forward.  What an opportune time, Brothers and Sisters, to undertake academic and intellectual discourses as well as corporate social responsibility activities and programmes on a wider scale in conjunction with our 30th Anniversary celebrations.  Such activities and events, Insya’Allah, will surely lend credence to the university’s very own existence and would serve to enhance its image to the outside world,” she reiterated.

“Recently, we had our Constitutional Head, His Royal Highness, the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, initiate the soft-launching of our 30th Anniversary celebration (see cover story).   It was done at our Grand Iftar, which was held on 24th Ramadhan 1433 or  13th August  at the compounds of the university mosque’, she recalled.

“We have been searching for a new tag-line to represent the theme of our 30th Anniversary celebrations.  The management and CCD wittingly settled for the initials  I.I.U.M. – The first ‘I’ stands for Inspire, another ‘I’ would stand for Innovate; ‘U’ stands for United; and ‘M’ stands for Making a Difference”.   Henceforth, this will be our tag-line in conjunction with our 30th Anniversary celebrations  besides our established motto: Garden of Knowledge and Virtue”, she revealed.

At the same event, Prof. Dr. Mohd Ismail Sayyed Ahmad, former Director  of IIUM Graduate School of Managemnt presented a cheque valued at RM 2,238,343.00 to the Rector.  This amount represents contributions by nine out of the 11 SBUs (Strategic Business Units): IIUM’s Graduate School of Management, Advanced Engineering and Innovation Centre, Centre for Teaching and Learning, Institute for Language Advancement  [IFLA], Harun M. Hashim Law Centre, Centre for the Built Environment, KICT’s Centre for Information Technology Advancement,  IIUM Fertility Centre, and IIUM Breast Centre.
