GOMBAK - The Disability Services Unit (DSU), Office of Deputy Rector (Student Development and Community Engagement) received one unit of the Sahala® Wudu Station for the use of students, staff and guests with disabilities at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Mosque, IIUM Gombak campus. The Sahala® Wudu Station was installed on 29th May 2019 at the female area, and the official presentation took place the next day on 30th May 2019, witnessed by Cik Norazlinda Mohd Fadzil, Head Promotion & Marketing Communication (Affin Islamic Bank Berhad), En. Ahmad Shahreen Rahim, Assistant Manager, Promotion & Marketing Communications (Affin Islamic Bank Berhad), En. Helmi Afizal Zainal, Senior Executive, Zakat Management (Affin Islamic Bank Berhad), Prof. Dr. Ruzita Mohd Amin, Head of DSU and Br. Mohd. Razif bin Mamat, Covering Director, IIUM Endowment Fund (IEF). The Sahala® Wudu Station cost RM6,500 which was fully sponsored by Affin Islamic Bank Berhad through the IIUM Endowment Fund.

The installation of the Sahala® Wudu Station is one of the initiatives by the DSU to improve the accessibility of the IIUM campus and facilities for persons with disabilities. As of February 2019, there are 85 students and staff with disabilities registered with the Disability Services Unit (DSU). Out of the 85, thirteen of them are wheelchair users who will directly benefit from the Wudu’ Station. The SHAS Mosque is an important place frequented by the campus community, including those with disabilities, to perform their prayers in congregation and for many other activities. With the Sahala® Wudu Station, wheelchair users and those with mobility impairment including the elderly can perform their ablution safely and comfortably without having to worry of slipping and falling at the regular ablution area. Hence, the Sahala® Wudu Station is indeed a significant contribution towards enhancing the quality of life of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in their religious practices and in creating an inclusive environment for all. Our utmost gratitude to Affin Islamic Bank Berhad for this meaningful contribution.

On the other hand, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in IIUM received an additional boost in the facilities and support provided for them with the handing over of a new mobility van contributed by Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS). This is the second mobility van contributed by LZS to the IIUM, the first was in 2015. The Nissan Urvan NV350 which has been installed with a hydraulic lift has the capacity to accommodate 2 wheelchair passengers and 4 non-wheelchair passengers per trip. As of February 2019, there are 85 students and staff with disabilities registered with the Disability Services Unit (DSU), out of which, thirteen of them are wheelchair users. The arrival of the new mobility van is most welcomed, considering the high utilization rate of the existing mobility vans for transporting students with mobility impairments and those who are wheelchair users to commute to classes every day, to go to the hospital for appointments and treatments, for off-campus extra-curricular activities, and for attending meetings and other official duties at ministries and other government and non-government agencies. The IIUM, in particular the DSU, would like to express its utmost appreciation to Lembaga Zakat Selangor for its continuous support for the PwD community in IIUM.
