In 1995 the University established the Centre for Community Service and Continuing Education (CENSERVE). It was later transformed to Community Service Unit under the Student Development Division. After 15 years of establishment, the University Management gave CENSERVE a new image and became Centre for University Social Responsibility, to enable it continue its success stories in serving the people around us through community service and humanitarian works.

Using the same acronym, CENSERVE is now refers to Centre for University Social Responsibility, under the Office of the Deputy Rector (Student Affairs).

OUR FUNCTIONS

CENSERVE is entrusted to coordinate community service activities done by both staff and students. These activities will be part of the University’s social responsibilities to serve the local community and the society at large.

DEFINING IIUM ‘s  SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

We chose the term university social responsibility (USR) over corporate social responsibility (CSR) to convey the social purpose of the International Islamic University, Malaysia.

As mentioned by YBhg. Tan Seri Prof. Dr. Kamal Hasan, social responsibility of the university means

“the moral obligation that the university has towards the development or betterment of the community in which IIUM is situated, the upliftment of the society at large by direct or indirect educational means, the amelioration of certain social needs, problems or expectations within the society, or the material or non-material contributions of the members of the university community to general human or environmental wellbeing without demanding or expecting financial or material benefit thereof.”

Therefore, CENSERVE plans to help the IIUM community to serve the society through well-planned activities for the above purposes.
