GOMBAK, 2 July 2020: A group of 40 students received laptops from Prof. Dr. Isarji Hj. Sarudin in a handing-over ceremony for IIUM needy students held on Tuesday (30 June) at Multi-Purpose Hall, Wadi Budi in campus here.
The ceremony was organised by Student Affairs and Development Division (STADD), Office of Deputy Rector Student Development and Community Engagement (ODRSDCE) in collaboration with IIUM Endowment Fund, Information Technology Division (ITD) and IIUM Student Union (IIUMSU).
The initiative to help the students in need of computers was launched on 2 June and within less than a month after the semester reopened with Emergency Remote Teaching and Learning (ERTL), the university had managed to collect almost RM60,000 and deliver 40 laptops to the needy students.
There will be a second and third phase of the laptops handing over for needy students soon.
Prof. Dr. Sarji who was covering for the Rector said in his officiating speech, “In this sense, IIUM comprehensive of Gombak, Pagoh and Kuantan campuses accepts that no understudies ought to be abandoned and this demonstrates IIUM is leading the way.”
One of the recipients, Mohd Faiz Daniel bin Mohd Dahalam from Kulliyah of Economics and Management Sciences (KEMS) said, “It is a good initiative, I once have just finished doing my assignment but I could not save the file in my laptop and it happened before the submission of the assignment. It is frustrating knowing that my laptop broke down. With this initiative, it helps me in terms of saving time and cost to buy a new laptop.”
A recipient from Kuantan campus, Nur Ain Akilah Binti Shamsuddin from Kulliyyah of Nursing said, “I feel grateful because even though we do not study in the main campus in Gombak, we are given priority in IIUM”.
Another recipient from Kulliyyah of Education, Nik Nurin Alya Syaqilla said that students should be grateful to have online class at home. For her she said “when we feel down we can talk to the university directly and receive support”.
The laptops that students received are one-off fully subsidised units which students do not have to return as they will be theirs.
