KUALA LUMPUR, 5 November 2020: Alumni from Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws batch 1995 took the initiative to assist the needy community in Sabah particularly from the east coast and west coast areas recently.

The 22 alumni members from all over Malaysia managed to raise RM16,000 in fund for its recent activities in Sabah. The fund received is mainly from the alumni group itself with addition from their friends and family members as well as lecturers in IIUM.

The assistance is given in terms of cash donations and food baskets consisting of basic food necessities such as rice, oil, sugar, canned food and others to the needy communities which are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

All donations received were sent to the alumni in Sabah and the team from Sabah takes charge in preparing and delivering the food aid to the needy community.

One of the alumni from Sabah, Siti Hafsah Adenan said the team is helping in buying all the goods and packing them into the food baskets and distributing them accordingly to the targeted community with the rest of the team.

“We have three teams in Sabah in which two groups cover the east coast and one team covers the west coast.”

“For Kota Kinabalu, we work closely with Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM) Sabah chapter in preparing and delivering the food assistance to the community. The rest of the places is done by our alumni,” she added.

Meanwhile, according to IIUM LLB batch 1995 committee, Nornie Mohammad Ibrahim, the alumni had distributed around 80 food baskets in Sabah, consisting of 30 food baskets to Kota Kinabalu and 50 baskets to Lahad Datu and Semporna respectively.

“For Tawau, we distributed cash donations to 20 selected families and 50 pack foods to 50 frontline officers at Tawau Area Health Office for 12 consecutive days”, she said.

To date, the alumni managed to collect a total of RM76,000 to help the needy community in Klang Valley, Kelantan, and Pahang during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic in March as well as for the Sabah community recently.

The idea was initiated by Wan Farlene, leader of the IIUM LLB batch 1995 committee in using the remaining fund collected during its reunion session held last year to assist needy communities in Malaysia.***
