KUANTAN, 25 August 2020: The Kulliyyah of Science (KOS) must engage with faculties in IIUM in terms of technical and human centric among its programme and projects and for this the Kulliyyah needs to work across its expertise to come out with beneficial projects, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak said on Wednesday (19 August).

The Rector commented that a flagship programme is a proof of IIUM’s contribution to the society tthrough the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

“KOS is a very important kulliyyah in the sense that science is the thing of today, where we can’t move without science, but the issue is what sort of science are we talking about.

I want to bring  the notion of science that we teach in this university is applicable to people around us particularly young students who have different ideas of what science is all about,” the Rector added. He was making his round of visit to the Kulliyyah in campus here.

The Rector was impressed with the Kulliyyah’s plan to come out with a flagship project called “Marine School”.

He said: “It is an important thing because it relates to our everyday life, you can’t understand life without understanding the water and the ocean, thus this idea needs to be brought together.

I think KOS has fantastic facilities and these facilities need to be shared with the people around us.”

According to the Dean of KOS, Prof. Dr. Shahbudin Saad, although the Kulliyyah is lacking in the number of staff and limited facilities, they managed to get MYRA’s recognition of five-star award in 2019 for its research and the best kulliyyah in IIUM during IIUM Takrim 2019 ceremony.

The Dean mentioned that the earlier flagship programme of ‘Patin Buah’ is coming to its end of the project, where the Kulliyyah is in the midst of providing the breed to local community to expand it further.

He later responded on the Rector’s concerned on the upcoming project of “Marine School” which the Kulliyyah is planning to embark.

“Marine school will take into consideration the concerns on three main ecosystems which are coral reef, bank reef and seagrass ecosystem. If we do not sustain these three ecosystems, there will be no life and no fish.”

“We really need to concentrate on how we can save the oceans due to the climate change, global warming and so on, so the Marine School is a good platform for everyone to join and share their expertise,” he said.

Among other KOS’s plan beyond year 2020 is to come out with a flagship programme on Chemical Safety and Security for the community (CHESS) with the intention to raise awareness to the public on chemical radiation and the impact of chemical on human life.***
