In conjunction with Takrim Day 2019, one of the contested categories is the Mahallah Award. The idea of this award is to celebrate and appreciate students as well as staff’s contributions and achievements in the university’s curriculum throughout the year where the mahallahs were credited and awarded for their hard work, contributions and determinations. The best mahallah will be selected by a special committee based on a number of criteria such as documentation, and conduct of students activities to name a few. Another determining criteria towards the selection of the best mahallah is a presentation by the mahallah’s party, which took place on 20th June 2019.
Held at the IIUM Mini Auditorium where shortlisted mahallahs had to present their mahallah achievements and programs throughout the year, the event was organised by the Office of the Deputy Rector (Student Development & Community Engagement). Among the distinguished guests who graced the ceremony were the Director of Student Affairs & Development Division (STADD) IIUM, Madam Hafsah Mohd. Yusoff and two other panel judges, Encik Kamarrudin Ali, Senior Deputy Director of Research & Innovation (ODRRI) and Madam Ainun Mardziyah Bt. Haji Hassan.
The five shortlisted mahallahs competing for the Mahallah Award 2018 were Mahallah Aminah, Mahallah Asiah, Mahallah Sumayyah, Mahallah Bilal and Mahallah Fatimah Az-Zahra (Kuantan), being the sole representative from outside the Gombak Campus. As a new concept was introduced to crown the best mahallah, the participating mahallahs had to undergo several steps before reaching the final stage in ascertaining which mahallah deserves to be honoured as the best IIUM Mahallah for the year 2018.
Through the Mahallah Award, it is hoped that in future, students will be more spirited and energetic to participate in university activities and will use the award as an avenue to boost the introduction and maintenance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. Such participation is also a form of training towards the cultivation of good virtues and holistic personalities. Furthermore, it is hoped that the participation will enable the strengthening of relationships, ukhuwwah, and at the same time nurture the spirit of brotherhood among all parties involved including Principals, Fellows, the mahallah management and students.
