M.HSc. in English Language Studies

The Master of Human Science in English Language Studies programme provides students with knowledge of Linguistic skills to conduct research and produce academic reports in the field. Apart from mastery of the English Language, students can understand how English is used globally, particularly with the help of information technology. With this knowledge and expertise, they can apply it to a wider range of professional fields ranging from the media, human resources, public relations, public service, academic and related services.

The programme basically requires two years of full time study or four years on a part time basis. Students in this programme are engaged in in-depth study of the linguistic aspects of the English language. Students have a choice of selecting the ‘coursework and thesis’ or ‘coursework only’ programme.

Entry Requirements

University requirements as stated in the application form

  • For international applicants: TOEFL (600) or IELTS (Band 7.0)
  • For Malaysian applicants: TOEFL (600) or IELTS (Band 7.0) or EPT (Band 7.0)
  • If the degree was obtained from a university in an English speaking country, applicants may request a waiver of this requirement in writing


For non-English majors, the following conditions apply before applicants   can embark on the Master’s programmes.

  • One year of undergraduate English courses with PASS grades (B or higher) for each course (language or literature, according to choice of programme)
  • CGPA of 2.8 (out of 4.0) or the equivalent
  • Relevant working experience will be an added advantage
  • University requirements as stated in the application form
  • For international applicants: TOEFL (600) or IELTS (Band 7.0)
  • For Malaysian applicants: TOEFL (600) or IELTS (Band 7.0) or EPT (Band 7.0)
  • If the degree was obtained from a university in an English speaking    
  • Country, applicants may request a waiver of this requirement in writing
  • Complete the relevant pre-requisite courses
