A Doctoral thesis is an important scholarly achievement which must maintain certain standard. The thesis should contain work of merit to be presented in satisfactory literary form (including references, notes and bibliography, as appropriate), should not be of unnecessary length and should provide evidence of training in and application of research methods appropriate to the particular field of study.

The thesis must show the originality of work. Students may not select an area of research for which a degree has already been conferred in IIUM or any other University. However they may incorporate any part of such work provided that the part of the work which has been so incorporated is clearly indicated in their thesis. Plagiarism is considered to be a serious offence.

In line with the vision and mission of the University, it is highly recommended that the thesis should reflect to some extent an attempt to incorporate some Islamic perspectives on issues explored.
