Software Defined Radar for Landslide Early Warning System

Project Scope/ Area:

The offered position, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is an exciting fundamental project, funded for 3 years to develop a cutting-edge LabVIEW based software radar system to detect a landslide occurrence for an Early Warning System. The student will design and develop a novel radar system using NI USRP and LabVIEW software to detect the underlying ground movements pre-landslide event. The data then will be used to estimate the time for a landslide event for an early warning system.

Requirement:

Good Honours Degree or MSc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering ; Communications Engineering or any related field.
Strong research interest in interdisciplinary subjects, enthusiastic and good writing skills, inquisitiveness, motivation and creativity.
Experience with LabVIEW and NI equipment will be an added advantage.

Project Scope/ Area:

Explore and analyze a new biometrics authentication method based on fingertips epidermis layer thickness measurement. Tasks include hardware to measure and capture epidermis thickness, creating algorithm for capturing, extraction, matching, analyzing epidermis thickness data and evaluate the reliability of the measurement system and algorithm.

Requirement:

Bachelor's degree with honours in Electronics/Mechatronics/Electrical Engineering discipline or equivalent, 2nd class and above.
Candidate must be interested to do a Full‐Time Postgraduate Degree (MSc Mechatronics Engineering - Research Mode) at the International Islamic University Malaysia.
English proficiency is mandatory in both oral and writing.
Basic knowledge in electronics circuits design/programming is an added advantage.
Keen in experimental work and enjoy working in lab.

Project:
A Novel Pose Estimation Algorithm for Mobile AR via Inertial Sensing and Conditional Density Propagation.  

Project Scope/ Area:

Vision-based pose estimation in augmented reality applications rely on markers and still too computationally expensive and inaccurate on mobile devices. Noise and illumination changes may cause jitter in the estimated pose from frame to frame image sequence. To overcome the problem, we propose to incorporate inertial sensors fusion to align the vision-based pose estimation with the sensors-based pose estimation. The effect of drift on the gyroscope and poor accuracy in magnetometer and accelerometers under fast motion will be addressed using particle filtering approach utilizing condensation algorithm. The outcome of this research would be a robust and smooth pose estimation algorithm that utilizes all the built-in inertial sensors in most mobile devices.

Design and Implementation of an Adaptive Control on the Energy Management System of an Electric Vehicle

Project Scope/ Area:
This work focuses on the energy management system of an electric vehicle, utilizing adaptive controller and system optimization to maximize the efficiency of the energy storage system. The underlying principle of the control optimization is to achieve efficient charging and discharging of the battery, maintaining capacitor charge state, and providing balanced energy storage system at different capacities. Adaptive controller is employed to deal with current variations during the charging and discharging of the battery, with the goal to minimize the current variations to ensure the longevity of the energy storage system. Keyword: Nonlinear Control Systems, Adaptive Controller

Project Scope/ Area:
The ultimate aim of this research is to synthesis hybrid nanosorbent of CaO incorporated with MgO and SiO2 via co-precipitation. The CaO will be incoporated with MgO and SiO2 at different parameter. The CO2 capture of hybrid nanosorbent materials will be measured by using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) at multiple cyclic of adsorption/desorption.
