The development of halal-related new science and technology innovations moves along with the rapid growth of the halal industry. New devices, gadgets, methods are being created which will definitely boost the halal industry. INHART is currently championing the university’s role in R&D and training within the halal ecosystem. For over the past 6 years INHART has paved the way to become an outstanding institute in halal-based research and development. INHART focuses on research covering various fields, including smart and quick detection systems for non-halal products, investigations of potential biomarker for non-halal ingredients, halal vaccine, Muslim friendly hospitality and tourism, development of halalan and toyyiban food processing technology, etc.

HALAL INNOVATIONS

1. LAD-PEN 

Inventor: Prof. Dr. Rini Akmeliawati 

LAD-pen is a pen-sized portable kit to detect non-halal materials in food, pharmaceutical and personal care products. The instrument which is also called Electric Nose is able to detect lard and alcohol in any products by a simple touch to the product tested. The results will be shown on the kit without going through laboratory processes. LAD-pen is a very useful invention for public to protect them from consuming non halal materials. 

2. MUSLIM FRIENDLY HOSPITALITY RATING TOOL 

Inventor:  Dr. Khairusy Syakirin Has-yun Hashim

The Muslim Friendly Hospitality Rating Tool is the first of its kind to rate hotels according to the needs of Muslim tourists.  The rating is based on the closeness of the food, facilities, service, delivery system, human resources to Islamic values. Assessments are conducted by qualified auditors certified by INHART. The total points scored by the hotel determines the rank of the hotel in terms its Muslim friendliness to the customers.

3. HALAL FOOD SUPPLEMENTS FROM SEAWEED

Fucoxanthin is a xanthophyll found as an accessory pigment in the chloroplasts of brown algae and most other heterokonts, giving them a brown or olive-green color.  Fucoxanthin has been reported to be a popular ingredient in health food.  It is used in slimming products and researchers are looking into its anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and anti-cancer effects. We have designed a suitable method to extract bioactive compounds from brown seaweed using CO2 super critical fluid extraction (SFE) for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications.

4. HALAL CREAM CHEESE AND DRIED WHEY PROTEIN USING BROMELAIN ENZYME 

Inventor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azura Amid

Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes derived from the stems and juice of pineapples. It has been extensively used in food industry; for meat tenderization, baking processes, and in prevention of browning of apple juice.  Stem bromelain is a highly accepted phytotherapeutic agent. It has anti-tumor and antiinflammatory effects, use in wound healing, as digestive aids, etc. The use of bromelain as halal ingredients will create new alternative in food industry. We have invented halal cream cheese and dried whey protein using bromelain enzyme as substitute. 

5. HALAL MICROCARRIER  

Inventor: Prof. Dr. Hamzah Mohd. Salleh

A microcarrier is a miniscule support matrix allowing for the growth of adherent cells in bioreactors.  Microcarriers are regularly used to grow protein-producing or virus-generating adherent cell populations. High density mammalian cell culture is important for the production of various biopharmaceutical products (e.g. viral vaccines, recombinant proteins, gene therapy vectors, secretome, etc.). By using microcarriers, high density cell culture can be easily achieved as they provide large surface area for cell attachment and growth. The team managed to invent competitively-priced halal microcarriers that are in the right direction towards production of halal-based biopharmaceuticals and therapeutics. Microcarriers also have great potentials in tissue engineering applications such as in skin grafting and organ regeneration.

6. PRE-FILLED SYRINGE (PFS) NANO-EMULSION ANTIBIOTIC FOR PERIONDITITIS 

Inventor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Farahidah Mohamad

PFS Doxycycline nanoemulsion, is an antibiotic emulsified with Nigella sativa oil and eugenol to become an emulsion of nano size, prefilled in syringe of 1bml volume. Each syringe is meant for 1 patient, which is sufficient to treat entire mouth. The formula is unique due to fusion of 3 medicines, namely contemporary (doxycycline), prophetic (Nigella sativa oil) and Malay traditional (eugenol from clove) medicines anticipated to give synergistic effects.
