KUANTAN - Kulliyyah of Dentistry, IIUM can now offer orthognathic treatment. Orthognathic is a method of treatment that may be advised for patients who have severe jaw size problems or asymmetry. In such patients, orthodontic tooth movement (braces treatment) alone will not be able to fully correct the bite.
In this multidisciplinary treatment, the orthodontic treatment is supplemented with jaw surgery to move the jaws into a more normal position and helps to improve patient’s facial appearance. Treatment will be carefully planned at a joint clinic involving orthodontist and maxillofacial surgeon. Psychological assessment will also be made to assess and intervene patients' suitability and preparation before undergoing surgery.
