Programme Description
One of the important challenges facing professional nurses, both in Malaysia and overseas, is that of assuming responsibility for continued self-development through life-long learning. The reason for this is simple; professional nursing practice, like professional medical practice, is dynamic and constantly evolving as new knowledge, understanding and insights into health and health-related conditions emerge. Whether a 21st century graduate nurse chooses to advance his / her career through the development of expertise in clinical nursing, nursing research, nursing education or nursing management and administration, the need to combine “hands-on” nursing practice with further study is inescapable. In recognition of this, postgraduate study options for Malaysian nurses are expanding. No longer is postgraduate nurse education in Malaysia limited to attendance at specialised seminars, workshops and conferences or to attendance at post-basic courses offered by the Ministry of Health. No longer is it necessary for all Malaysian nurses who wish to undertake postgraduate degree studies to go overseas. Opportunities for postgraduate study at Master’s degree level are now available at several Malaysian universities and Doctoral level programmes are in the process of development. As each year passes, and more and more Malaysian nurses complete their undergraduate degree studies, more postgraduate options will materialise. Therefore, although you may be an undergraduate student at present, please do not restrict your “vision” in so far as your on-going professional education is concerned.
