Brief introduction

Mathematics plays a fundamental role in our society, from the usual daily activities of human interaction to the usage of network and technology - all these things are possible because of mathematics. Here, we offer courses which encompass the fundamental and concentrated disciplines of mathematical sciences. The students will have the opportunity to explore the area of statistics, computational mathematics, financial mathematics, pure mathematics, operational research, optics, and quantum cryptography. We also offer minor programmes from three fields, namely Minor in Education Studies, Minor in Business Administration and, Minor in Information and Communication Technology. The programme has a minor critical component in Islamic Revealed Knowledge in addition to the core Mathematical Sciences subjects.

Program Outcome

At the end of the programme, students are expected to be able to:
  • Demonstrate familiarity with, and apply important concepts associated with mathematical sciences.
  • Demonstrate ICT literacy and competent in using mathematical software in problem solving.
  • Identify relevant real world problems, analyse and formulate the corresponding mathematical problems and produce solutions.
  • Communicate mathematical ideas and thoughts rationally and express them using verbal and non-verbal interpersonal communication skills.
  • Adapt to social environment and motivate the society towards positive change through disseminating information and imparting of knowledge to the public.
  • Motivate and utilise the knowledge and skills acquired to further education.
  • Execute professional duties guided by Islamic values.
  • Understand and demonstrate basic entrepreneurial and managerial principles.
  • Coordinate resources to achieve an assigned task/objective.
  • nderstand, apply and harmonise philosophical principles of mathematics with Islam.

Career Opportunities

The Mathematical Sciences degree is a versatile qualification – does not train students for specific jobs. It teaches a wide range of skills that employers value - logical thinking, problem – solving skills and analytical and organizational activities. Your strengths, interests, and values along with the knowledge you develop in and out of the classroom are a big part of your career profile.

Program Structure

In order to obtain the Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences degree from IIUM, a student must successfully complete at least 130 credit hours (CH) of course work, consisting of the University and Kulliyyah, Department requirements courses as follows:
