IIUM President, Hon. Tan Sri Mohd. Sidek Hj. Hassan officiated the soft-launching of the  International  Institute of Wasatiyyah [I.I.W.] on January 18, 2013.  The event was held in conjunction with the university’s monthly congregation or  ‘Al Liqa’ ‘Al Shaari which took place at the Cultural Activity Centre.  Tan Sri Mohd. Sidek praised the IIUM intellectual, academic and administrative communities for taking on the initiative to establish  I.I.W. which will function within the vicinity of ISTAC (Institute for Islamic Thought and Civilisation).

In his opening remarks, he reminded the audience of the the need to restore civility in the international arena and to promote inter faith goodwill and understanding.  Malaysia is a remarkable nation made up of a population of diverse ethnicities and religions which is truly a success story for others to emulate.  Our strength is in our diversity; so let’s not tolerate extremist views and sectarianism or militancy and radicalism that will only serve to destroy this social fabric that has been carefully woven since the nation achieved its Independence in 1957, he reiterated.

The I.I.W. initiative by IIUM ought to be seen in the context of the clarion call made by the Prime Minister of Malaysia at the United Nations General Assembly on 12th October 2010 when he urged for the formation of GMM or the Global Movement of the Moderates.   This is necessary in order to debunk the myth or distorted image that Muslims are terrorists and trouble makers where Islam and Muslims have become the primary targets of demonisation, Islamophobia, and ethnic prejudice in the West particularly after the 9/11 incident.

Earlier, Distinguished Professor Tan Sri Dr. Mohd. Kamal Hassan of ISTAC briefed the audience on the concept of Wasatiyyah which, according to him, is more than just moderation.  The concept of Wasatiyyah also embraces the concept of balance, justice, and excellence or  itqaan.   Islam exhorts its followers to embrace balance in life, moderation in personal character and behavior as prescribed by the holy Quran.

A booklet entitled The Need to Understand Al-Wasatiyyah was also distributed to the attendees as a guide “to foster a thorough understanding  of the meaning of and attempts at nurturing a peaceful relationship with others and religious tolerance – norms to be observed by the entire muslim community in the context of the Global Movement of the Moderates”, he stressed.
