TOPIC | Review and Mapping of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services in Malaysia | The Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on Students’ Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-Being in Malaysia |
---|---|---|
BACKGROUND | Yayasan Hasanah (YH) is looking for a consultant to provide a mapping of mental health and psychosocial support interventions targeting students and adolescents aged between 0-21 and to document promising and good practices. The mapping comes as a first step to strengthen YH’s and partners’ understanding of the mental health context and availability of services aiming to promote and support the mental health of students, adolescents, and families in the country. | Student mental health and psychosocial wellbeing have been significantly impacted by COVID-19. Restricted movement, closure of schools, physical and social distancing, and in some instances, increased violence and abuse in the home and online world, as well as fear of contracting the disease, are impacting students learning, behavior, and healthy development. The pandemic and resulting changes in school and family life are new factors impacting students’ mental health which have led to a host of stressors for them. Recent literature on adolescent mental health consistently shows increased rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to the pandemic. To address this via a focus on the education sector, Yayasan Hasanah seeks to take a deep dive into school-related factors, including risk and protective factors impacting the mental health and well-being of students. For this effort, Yayasan Hasanah is commissioning a study on the mental health and psychological wellbeing of students in Malaysia to address this complex and multi-layered issue exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. |
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES | a. Provide baseline data of the situation in the country with regards to mental health policy, programmes and services for students, adolescents, and their families.
b. Identify gaps in policy frameworks, programmes, and service provision and formulate recommendations for overcoming the challenges. c. Identify and document promising practices to promote an exchange of knowledge on initiatives for students and adolescent mental health and psychosocial wellbeing. | The main aim of this study was to examine the level, trend, and impact of mental health on Malaysian primary and secondary students due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including school-related factors affecting their well-being. This study will assess the role of the education system in addressing both school-related risks and factors potentially contributing to poor mental health. These findings will provide insights for the formulation of mitigation measures to help students, teachers, and parents cope with the negative mental health effects in the currently unpredictable situation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based on the evidence, the study will provide recommendations on what and how the education system and other organizations could, in parallel, be utilized and strengthened to address increasing mental health and psychosocial needs among students in schools. |
KEY INFORMATION AREAS / RESEARCH SCOPE | The consultant will carry out the following activities in consultation with YH: a)Desk review on the country’s mental health and psychosocial context with a focus on students and adolescents. b)Conduct mapping of available services c)Identify the main gaps of the system of mental health and psychosocial support services for students, adolescents, and their families and formulate recommendations. | cell3_3 |
