IIUM Pagoh: Site Visits Within Malaysia Boarders Improve Students’ Research Skills

Students of Tourism Planning and Hospitality Management (TPHM) are encouraged to go for site visits as part of their assessments to gain information and primary data for research. Recently, TPHM students had went to different places in Malaysia to conduct the site visits.
7th - 9th March 2019:
A total of 32 students from TPHM 2102 – Tourism Workshop 3 under the supervision of Sr. Siti Aisah Abas had went to different districts in Pagoh, and Muar, Johor to collect the data and observations from the visitors and local community. Among the districts are Lenga, Bukit Kepong, Panchor, Sawah Ring and Grisek Town. During the visit, the students also took the chance to get closer with the aboriginal community in Lenga through some engaging activities. This site visit has not only give them the information required, but it also has built great relationship between the students and the villagers.

14th - 16th March 2019:
A site visit was conducted by the students of TPHM 1102 – Tourism Workshop 1 to Kluang, Johor. 20 students were supervised by Dr. Nur Hidayah Abd Rahman. Through the visit, the students conducted series of data collection from different stakeholders such as the local community, tourism vendors, suppliers, local authorities and tourists. It helped the students in developing their skills in observation and applying the theoretical learning into practical.

18th - 21st March 2019.
‘In the Realm of Penang’ is another site visit conducted by the students of TPHM 3202, TPHM 3215 and TPHM 4130. The trip had involved around 14 students from three sections with one accompanying officer, Sr. Nur Murniza Mohd Zaidi. It was 3 days 2 nights trip to Georgetown, Pulau Pinang. This site visit was meant for the students to gain several findings through interviewing the local people, tourism provider and make critical observation throughout the visit.
