KUALA LUMPUR: A community complex-based housing concept, the brainchild of International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) students, emerged the winner in the undergraduates category of the Pertandingan Idea Perbandaran PR1MA-MIP at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) today.
Taking place at the national-edition of the ‘Ekspo Jualan Perumahan - Ke Arah Sejuta Impian’, the competition was organised by Perbadanan Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (PR1MA) with the cooperation of the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP).
The winning idea, featuring a community complex concept with complete facilities, earned the sixth semester students from the university’s design faculty a cash prize of RM8,000.
The team leader, Nurul Ardila Azmi, 22, said the concept, 'Co-MPLEX 19 Social Townhouse Sg Buloh' was the idea of the group of five, who envisioned a harmonious community.
Her teammates consisted of Nur Syahinda Mustofa, 22; Nuranisa Huda Ramlan,22; Ainina Azizan,22; and Nurul Emmira Natasya Nordin,23.
"It's not just about the physical arrangement. We integrate the youth by not clustering them into one environment so we brainstormed ways to include older folks. The conclusion is a harmonious community.
"The idea of the layout is that everything should be in walking distance," said Nurul Ardila.
The competition received a total of 55 submissions and 19 were shortlisted. The competition was divided into four categories, including Neighbourhood Design Ideas for Students (planning, architecture and landscape), Township Design Ideas for MIP Young Graduates (planning), Green Township Design for MIP New Planning Firms (planning), and PR1MA Research Proposal (open to the public).
Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, PR1MA Chief Executive Officer Datuk Abdul Mutalib Alias, and MIP president Tpr. Ihsan Zainal Mokhtar presented the prizes.
Meanwhile, Idris said the programme opens up opportunities to new designers to showcase their skills and new concepts in the area of building development.
He said each idea deemed suitable with PR1MA project concepts would be studied and used to improve PR1MA’s existing offerings.
The ‘Ekspo Jualan Perumahan - Ke Arah Sejuta Impian’ has a total of 127 booths hosted by PR1MA in collaboration with various housing agencies, including Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB), 1Malaysia Housing Projects for Civil Servants (PPA1M), and Federal Territories Affordable Housing (RUMAWIP).
Running from Saturday to April 1, it serves as a one-stop centre for prospective home-owners, especially those from the lower-income and middle-income group.
