KUANTAN - - The Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM) is the first teaching hospital in Malaysia to be certified with the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) of 9001:2015 (Quality Management System) and MS 1900:2014 (Shariah based Quality Management System) by SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd.
The Hospital Director, Assoc. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Saufi Awang, said the hospital made its benchmark by resolving all the three Non-Conformance Report (NCR) received for ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System) in one day, thus making it the pioneer in teaching hospitals to receive the certification which combined all departments into one ISO.
“Like other hospital, normally the certification of ISO is based on the departments or unit, but for us, the hospital managed to be certified into one ISO involving both clinical and administration,” Dr. Saufi Awang said while officiating the SASMEC @IIUM’s Staff Excellence Award which was conducted virtually at the Hospital Auditorium.
Dr. Saufi Awang later expressed his gratitude by congratulating all the award winners and staff in making SASMEC @ IIUM a leading teaching hospital in Malaysia to be certified with two ISOs despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
He added initially the hospital did not intend to proceed with the second stage, and the plan was to continue in the year 2021 knowing that the COVID-19 pandemic and the NCR received by SIRIM in the first stage needed a thorough revision.
“Surprisingly, our team managed to solve almost all the NCR in the midst of the pandemic and when I met them in August, my team said we are ready for the second stage.”
“It took three days for SIRIM to process our submission in the second stage which took place in November, but we have prepared earlier on all the necessary actions and documentations by conducting trainings with relevant departments and consulting IIUM campuses to ensure the smoothness of the process,” he said.
As a result, the hospital secured the certifications and the hospital also made its history to be the first teaching hospital in Malaysia to be certified with MS 1900:2014 which is, Shariah Based Quality Management System with a zero NCR received by SIRIM since the first stage.
“We are going to participate in the Malaysia Book of Record and hopefully in the near future, we are able to be not only the first teaching hospital in Malaysia to get such certifications but also a benchmark for other teaching hospitals in providing the best services to the community,” he added.
Meanwhile, the hospital is also heading towards another recognition of a baby-friendly hospital by creating the first ever Halimatussadia Mother’s milk centre in Malaysia.
This baby-friendly hospital project highlights the miracle of breast milk, especially for premature babies who are easily exposed to the risk of intestional inflammation or necotising enterocolitis (NEC) which could become worse if they are given formula milk.
Dr. Saufi Awang said the project is moving towards another phase after being given approval by the Mufti of Pahang and Pahang Islamic Religious Council and Malay Custom (MUIP).***
