Gombak, 28 September 2021.  Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Md Tahir Md Azhar speaks to academics at Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws in a sharing session on academic integrity. Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Md Tahir is the IIUM Ombudsman from the Office of Ombudsman and Integrity, International Islamic University Malaysia.

He shares that academics are expected to be effective, expert and exemplary teachers for them to fulfil their duties with integrity.

He also points out that to perform their duty with integrity, academics should not only be ‘over the counter’ researchers or unimpactful authors. The works of academics with integrity should be beneficial to the discipline and the society.

According to him the ideal academic is someone who is scholarly, an expert in his field, an ethical individual of high integrity, a pride of his students, productive researcher of quality and is held in high regard by the society.

Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Md Tahir refers to the IIUM Integrity Rules which all members of IIUM are bound to follow. The failure to act with integrity would jeopardise the works of the university and the quality of teaching and learning of the students. Because of that, the failure to act with integrity requires investigation and remedial or disciplinary actions to prevent the problem from festering.

The core values in ensuring academic integrity are taqwa, amanah, accountability and justice.

Professor Farid Sufian Shuaib in thanking Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Md Tahir points to the need for academic integrity to be embraced and practised by everybody for the Kulliyyah to achieve its mission of working towards just laws and just legal systems through the process of harmonisation of Shariah and law which is championed by balanced graduates.
