Disability not an obstacle to 3 extraordinary persons to graduate

GOMBAK, 12 November 2018: “We must use what Allah has given us, our time and energy in achieving something that will make our family proud,” said Azzrulkhan Hasrullah Matsah, the recipient of Special Recognition Award for Exceptional Achievement, an award sponsored by Microsoft  (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

Despite disability of using his legs and having limited movement, he became the first person with disability to crawl up Mount Everest, reaching the Base Camp at 5,350 meters (17,598 feet) above sea level in May this year during the KE7B EVEREST BASE CAMP EXPEDITION.

Furthermore, Azzrulkhan also became the first person with disability to successfully crawl up Mount Kinabalu, Sabah in 2016 and was listed in Malaysia Book of Records.

Azzrulkhan, from Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences received the award from the President of IIUM, Dr. Maszlee Malik, who is also the Minister of Education, at the first session of 34th Convocation on Saturday (10 November).

Other than Azzrulkhan, Nur Amalina binti Kamsani with eye impairment, from the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyah of Laws (AIKOL) received the Abdullah Ummi Maktum Special Achievement Award on academic achievement. She was born with low vision but then underwent surgeries last year which led to blindness in her right eye and low vision on her left eye.

“I can only see with my left eye but with limited vision but I believe the limitation doesn’t stop me to move forward for my future,” she said.

‘Atiqah binti Othman, also from Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyah of Laws (AIKOL), was the recipient of the Amru Ibn Al-Jamuh Special Achievement Award in Co-curricular. She had bone tumor which had caused her to be physically disabled. ***
