GOMBAK – Recently many were shocked with news that a number of students in campus were struggling to survive as it was reported that they only had one meal a day or had to go on fasting quite frequently because they did not have enough money to buy food.

This issue had attracted the attention of a few entities within the IIUM campus which started to conduct a free food programme designed to help the needy students who were really struggling to survive.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) had taken the problem seriously when the student body took steps to organise a free food programme by conducting a campaign called ‘Down to Earth Zero Hunger’.

A series of campaigns were conducted under the ‘Down to Earth Zero Hunger’ programme where they distributed free food for students in need at cafeterias like KENMS café and HS café.

In line with the above effort, the SRC has recently announced that it has introduced a new application, OhFreeFood application, where students can get free food at anytime and this application is now available in play store for both iOS and android. This announcement was made by the SRC representative at the closing ceremony of the ‘Down to Earth Zero Hunger’ programme.

In response to the SRC’s announcement, Deputy Rector (Students Affairs and Alumni), Associate Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Hasan, in his closing speech of the programme said: “OhFreeFood is one of the advanced applications that supports the vision of 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) which also supports the vision of universities.”

“This is the kind of programme that we require from the student body which is more impactful to benefit not only the IIUM community but also the society at large,” he added.***
