INOCEM to become the leader in maritime and oceanography studies.

KUANTAN - - The Institute of Oceanography and Maritime Studies, IIUM or INOCEM is set to be the leader of marine studies especially in the East Coast of Malaysia. According the Rector of IIUM, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abd Razak, INOCEM has a huge potential to make not only IIUM as place of choice in this field of study but also bring up the visibility of the University.
He added that “being an Islamic university, activities of the nature (Oceanography and Maritime Studies) are normally not associated with and after discussing with INOCEM, many things that had been suggested for the future of the institute”.
INOCEM will play a significant role in the IIUM sustainable development programme.
“one of the ideas of marine science now is to get awareness of how the whole element of climate change and global warming beginning to affect marine life, part of the sustainable goal is to look at the life under water and I think this is where INOCEM will be very relevant.” The Rector added.
INOCEM was established in 2003 with the objective to support and promote high quality research, training and outreach in oceanography, marine and maritime studies and related management programs through postgraduate education, research and effective programs that addressing marine issues in Malaysia.
Prof. Emeritus Dato’ Prof Dzulkifli further explains that collaboration will be made with other universities in the East Coast of Malaysia region to work together in the field of Maritime Studies for the benefit of the future generation.
INOCEM is expected to become a centre of excellence in IIUM specializing in research, development and commercialization of ocean and coastal resources with particularly emphasis in marine biotechnology and oceanography.
The Institute has emerged as a venue pursuing excellence in demand-driven education, research and synthesis and dissemination of knowledge across a wide range of these subjects in regional, national and international contexts.
