KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)’s lecturer Prof Dr Mohammed Abullais has been appointed as the Holder of Jamalullail Chair.
Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail presented the letter of appointment to Prof Mohammed in a special ceremony held at the university here today.
Prof Mohammed, 66, who is a lecturer at IIUM’s Department of Al-Quran and Sunnah and has been working with IIUM for 26 years, is a well-known scholar whose numerous academic writings on Islam could be found in international journals.
The Jamalullail Chair is an initiative under the Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs), with the aim of promoting research and specialised studies in the field of Islamic studies, Islamic Banking and Finance, Arabic and English Language studies, Islamic Tourism and Early Childhood Education.
A total of 50 scholarships will also be awarded to Malaysians pursuing doctorate studies at IIUM under the initiative.
In his speech at the event, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said students who were benefitting from the establishment of the chair, whether they are from Perlis or other parts of the world, should think of solving various intellectual issues and societal problems.
He said they must also avoid involvement in extreme ideologies and any misuse of religion.
“Reflect on the dynamic that have been displayed by our scholars in respecting and upholding the true values of the scholarship.
“I hope that by observing these attitudes, you will bring more benefits to the ummah and set this endeavour as the paragon of the scholarship at the global level,” he said.
