R.E.A.D : DEVELOPING TEACHERS TO EMPOWER YOUTH

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 February - - The Embassy of The United States of America and International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) soft launched the Leadership Development for Teachers Programme and Youth Leadership Fellowship in Private Islamic Schools. The event held at Flamingo Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.
The event was attended by IIUM Rector, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, accompanied by Deputy Rector (Student Development and Community Engagement) cum Chairman of R.E.A.D, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Hasan, Public Affairs Counselor of U.S Embassy, Mr. Bradley A. Hurst, representative from Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) and Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia (IKRAM) followed by academicians from Kulliyyah of Education, IIUM.
This programme, namely READ (Resilience, Empower, Active, Decision Maker) aims to equip teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop and train culturally aware and civic-minded youth leaders. It also aims to develop confident young Muslim leaders who are culturally aware and passionate about becoming agents of change in their local communities.
This is a three-phased-programme in that the first phase will commence in February 2020 and the final phase with a closing ceremony is targeted in June 2020. It will involve 65 teachers from IKRAM, ABIM and Orang Asli Schools and 120 students from IKRAM, ABIM, Orang Asli and Setia Budi schools.
IIUM Rector commented the National Education Philosophy (NEP) which emphasize values on moderation, balance and harmony can be put back into education which has somehow gone astray and hopefully these values will be the trust of education to the school that IIUM are collaborating with.
"I hope that this programme will be the lead programme to realise the NEP values which is part and parcel of education",he added.
The programme will be executed in three phases: 1. Leadership Development Showcase, 2. Teacher Training and Module Design, and 3. Student Leadership Camp. The first phase, Leadership Development Showcase will provide teachers with training in methodologies that will be used to deliver the youth leadership modules, engage teachers in micro-teaching and work on designing the modules.
The second phase which is Teacher Training Workshop will equip teachers with skills to deliver youth leadership curriculum based on the concepts like student-centered and project-based learning. The trainers for these two phases will be the experts in Leadership Classroom Management and Technology from Kuliyyah of Education (KOED).
The final phase, which is Student Leadership Camp aims to enhance teachers’ skill in delivering the youth leadership curriculum in a creative and student-centered manner while equip students with the knowledge, skills and mindset to become civic-minded leaders.***
