The Biology department has successfully initiated ‘Sustainable Environment’ Charity Fundraising (in conjunction with Mangrove Tree Planting Activity at Pantai Cempaka, Kuantan -28 Jan 2023) on 10 Jan 2023, 11 Jan 2023, 16 Jan 2023 and 17 Jan 2023. The fundraising acted as a platform to raise funds in order to purchase about 500 mangrove seedlings. The response towards the fundraising from staff and students of CFS IIUM was overwhelming. The biology department has garnered enormous support and cooperation from all parties in realizing the fundraising. The fundraising also indirectly inculcated the staff and students of CFS IIUM towards sustainable environment by contributing to mangrove tree planting activity in collaboration with Malaysian Nature Society (MNS).
Mangroves are one of the most productive ecosystems on the earth. They perform a range of useful ecological, bio-physical, and socio-economic functions. Mangrove forests are one of the most important and productive ecosystems on earth, providing a host of invaluable ecosystem goods and services to local people and the wider world. Healthy mangroves are an essential life support system for coastal communities around the world. They provide communities with sustainable living and reduce their vulnerability to disasters from natural events such as hurricanes and storm surges. Mangroves also have a big impact on the climate by absorbing up to four times more carbon dioxide than terrestrial forests and storing huge amounts of carbon in their sediments.
Many agencies and organizations are taking part and contributing to the preservation, conservation, and restoration of the world’s mangrove forests in an effort to promote a sustainable environment. Hence, the department of Biology is also taking one step ahead and partaking in the significant initiative towards a sustainable environment. On 28 January 2023, the department of Biology in collaboration with the Malaysian National Society (MNS) will be partaking in the mangrove planting activity. The staff of the biology department as well as students will be involved in this initiative which is part of an educational trip. The primary aim of the educational trip is to contribute to restoring dwindling mangrove plantations and thus help absorb carbon emissions while protecting residents from natural disasters such as flooding. Besides, the educational trip is aimed to enrich and fortify the knowledge of biodiversity, ecosystem and ecology, especially on the mangrove ecosystem.
Surah Al – Hadid, 57:11
مَن ذَا الَّذِي يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ وَلَهُ أَجْرٌ كَرِيمٌ
“Who is it that will offer up unto God a goodly loan, which He will amply repay?
For, such (as do so) shall have a noble reward”
Surah Baqarah, 2:215
“They will ask thee as to what they should spend on others. Say: “Whatever of your wealth you spend, shall (first) be for your parents, and for the near of kin, and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer; and whatever good you do, verily, God has full knowledge thereof.”
Among the objectives of the programme are:
1. To generate funds for mangrove planting activity which is aimed towards a sustainable environment
2. To support the educational trip which is organized by the biology department
3. To instill awareness on one of our roles as ‘Khalifah’ which is to protect our earth and Allah’s provision
4. To educate the public that ‘Sadaqah Jariyah’ is a voluntary form of ongoing charity that covers all aspects of giving
5. To seek Allah’s blessings and forgiveness by doing charity
6. To strengthen the ukhuwah among staff of the Biology Department
