“A 20^th Century Muslim Genius: Abbas Mahmud Al-Aqqad & His Contributions to Thought, Culture & Reform”

1. CALL FOR PAPERS / PARTICIPANTS

    

   The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) represented by the International Institute for Muslim Unity (IIMU) in the collaboration with the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences will be organizing the International Conference.  The International Conference entitled “A 20^th Century Muslim Genius: Abbas Mahmud Al-Aqqad & His Contributions to Thought, Culture & Reform” will be held on 16 & 17 April 2019 at the International Islamic University Malaysia.

    

   The organizers welcome academicians, scholars, researchers and other interested individuals and organizations to participate or write research papers specializing in Muslim women studies that preview the knowledge and findings from the Islamic perspectives. 

2.   CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES

The conference aspires to achieve the following objectives

1. To remove the injustice and neglect which befell Al-Aqqad in intellectual and academic circles and to justice to him as of giants of thought and culture in the 20^th Century.

2. To bring to light Al-Aqqad’s standing and influence in the realm of scholarship and the intellectual and cultural developments in Egypt and the Arab world in the 20^th Century.

3. To unveil Al-Aqqad’s scientific and methodological contributions to the different fields of knowledge covered in his writings.

4. To relate the younger generations of scholars and researchers to the legacy of one of the greatest Muslim thinkers and men of letters of the 20^th Century.

  3.   CONFERENCE THEMES

The themes of the conference can be identified at two levels as follows:

1.   The first includes the following areas :

1. The personality and character of Abbas Mahmoud Al-Aqqad, his formation and the encyclopedic nature of his contribution to the different fields of thought and culture.

2. Al-Aqqad’s intellectual system and worldview both as being reflected in his different works and as constituting the guiding framework for his treatment of scientific subjects and intellectual issues.

3. Abbas Mahmoud Al-Aqqad at the crossroads of intellectual trends and cultural currents of his time (authenticity/westernization, conservatism/openness, self/other, Muslim world/West, etc.)

    

2.   The second covers the following areas:

1. Abbas Mahmoud Al-Aqqad, man of letters and literary critic (criteria and method in literary criticism, renewal and imitation, acculturation and borrowing in literary creativity and criticism, etc.)

2. Islamic and Qur’anic studies in the thought and legacy of Al-Aqqad and the problematics of ijtihad and tajdid in contemporary Islamic thought (issues and method).

3. Historical studies and comparative religion in Al-Aqqad’s works between originality, renewal and imitation.

4. Issues of philosophical, social and political thought in Al-Aqqad’s legacy

5. Biographical writing according to Al-Aqqad : methodology and purpose.

6. Al-Aqqad’s intellectual, literary, journalistic and political battles.

7. The linguistic thought of Al-Aqqad and its implications for the teaching of Arabic.

8. His contemporaries and its impact think the reception of Al-Aqqad on subsequent generations.
