Project: A Novel Pose Estimation Algorithm for Mobile AR via Inertial Sensing and Conditional Density Propagation. Project Scope/ Area: Vision-based pose estimation in augmented reality applications rely on markers and still too computationally expensive and inaccurate on mobile devices. Noise and illumination changes may cause jitter in the estimated pose from frame to frame image sequence. To overcome the problem, we propose to incorporate inertial sensors fusion to align the vision-based pose estimation with the sensors-based pose estimation. The effect of drift on the gyroscope and poor accuracy in magnetometer and accelerometers under fast motion will be addressed using particle filtering approach utilizing condensation algorithm. The outcome of this research would be a robust and smooth pose estimation algorithm that utilizes all the built-in inertial sensors in most mobile devices.
