KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Bernama) -- Professor Datuk Seri Dr Zaleha
Kamarudin's appointment as rector of the International Islamic
University of Malaysia (IIUM) in 2011 successfully broke the tradition
when she became the first woman to lead an Islamic university in the
world.
It has indirectly made Malaysia a leader compared to other Muslim
countries in terms of raising women to a higher level of achievement.
Zaleha, 57, said the platform provided enabled the potential and
capabilities of a Malaysian woman to be highlighted to a higher level
including internationally.
"I am grateful that through this position I was appointed to the
Women's Advisory Council of the Organisation Of Islamic Conference (OIC)
which allows me to address matters pertaining to law, education and
contemporary issues."
"This also indirectly allows me to leverage on my expertise to a more
optimum level," she said, having a Doctorate of Philosophy, Comparative
Family Law (Civil and Syariah Law) from the University of London.
Additionally, Zaleha's personage was also revealed when she was
appointed as the first Terengganu Syariah Appeals court woman judge last
year. She had 30 years of experience in Islamic law.
Meanwhile, Datuk Roosme Hamzah, who has been the Secretary of Dewan
Rakyat since 2007, proved that there was no obstacle for women to move
forward.
"Being the Secretary of Dewan Rakyat not only gives me the opportunity
to improve myself in carrying out the duties of the country's
administration, but it also allows me to venture to the international
level because this position is unique and recognised globally."
"Indirectly, I can give a view on Malaysia in handling the Dewan Rakyat
and sharing experiences with others from more advanced countries," she
said.
Roosme created history when she became the first woman to be elected to
the post and the 12th since C.A Fredericks of the United Kingdom was
appointed in 1959.
Meanwhile, Universiti Putra Malaysia vice-chancellor Prof Datin Dr Aini
Ideris admitted that more women were given the opportunity to take
office at the highest level in line with the government's commitment to
empower the group taking into account their qualifications and
achievements.
