IIUM emerged as Runner-up of the 4th International Universities Arabic Debate Championship

International Islamic University Maysia (IIUM) Arabic debate team emerged as the Runner-up for Open Category in the 4th International Universities Arabic Debate Championship (IUADC), held in Doha, Qatar, Wednesday (12 April 2017). Qatar University was instead made the Champion.
The final round witnessed the motion was released 30 minutes prior to the match. Participants are quarantined for the next 30 minutes to discuss and preparing arguments. They were not allowed to use any devices such as cell phones and laptops to search for information.
The competition is the largest and most pretigious Arabic debate conmpetition with participation of more than 80 universities from 46 countries all over the world.
The IIUM team, namely Abdul Rahim Ellias, Mohamad Ikmal Hakimi Mohamad Helni, Muhammad Nazri Rostam and Muhammad Nurfirman Mohamed became the first team represented by the non-native Arabic speakers to reach the final of the Open Category of this competition. Br. Muhammad Nurfirman Mohamed was listed as Third Best Speaker among Non-native Speakers.
The team competed in five preliminary rounds and defeated the team from Sultan Qaboos University of Oman in the octo-final Round to secure a spot as 16 best teams from 88 teams. The team ranked 9th out of 16 teams to be qualified for the knock-out rounds. The team defeated the team from University of Khartoum, Sudan in the quarter-final and advanced to the finals after deafeating Birzeit University, Palestine, in the semi-final round.
