IIUM wins Malay Debate Category of MCMC Debating Championship 2018

Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) jointly organized the MCMC Debating Championship 2018 in collaboration with Malaysian Varsities Debate Council (MADUM) on the 2nd – 4th of March 2018 at UPM, Serdang. Using the format of Asian Parliamentary Debate, the tournament aims to spread awareness among our youth on the smart usage of social media and the spreading of information online. More than 40 teams from universities and schools nationwide participated in the tournament. IIUM World Debate and Oratory Centre (IWON), International Islamic University Malaysia Gombak has sent two teams for the Malay Category and three teams for the English Category, consisting mainly of IIUM junior debaters, to compete in the tournament.
Debating on the motion of “Kebebasan media menyuburkan demokrasi” (Freedom of media will enhance democracy), Team IIUM B (Malay) emerged as the Champion of the tournament after beating the host team, UPM at the Grand Final of the tournament. The debaters in the winning team are, Nur Azmina Izzati Binti Aini Azman (First Year), Abdul Rahman Bin Zakaria (Second Year) and Mohammad Omar Bin Suharuddin (First Year), all students of Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL). Mohammad Omar also won the Best Debater of the Grand Final. Besides that, Muhamad Hilmy Bin Mohd Yazid (Second Year, AIKOL) from IIUM English Debate Team also emerged as the Overall Best Debater for the English Category while Team IIUM B (English) reached the semi-final round of the tournament.
This is the second national competition of the year where IIUM Malay Debate Team has emerged as the overall champion, after Pertandingan Debat Astar 2018 in January at Universiti Malaya.
