Gombak, 27 August 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic has a huge impact on the well-being of all members of the society. The socio-economic impact on the children who were orphaned by the death in quick succession of their parents could not be imagined. To provide some practical steps for the beneficiaries and the guardian to obtain their shares from the estate of the deceased, the Property Law Research Unit of Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL) organises a forum to discuss the issue.
The panellists for the forum are Tuan Haji Baharuddin Aziz from the Estate Distribution Section, the Department of Director General of Lands and Mines, Assoc Prof Dr Akmal Hidayah Halim and Dr Tajul Aris Ahmad Bustami from AIKOL. Assoc Prof Dr Mohamad Asmadi Abdullah moderates the event.
The forum reminds the importance of estate planning since we never know when we will depart from this world. The planning may include writing a will to inform our family members regarding our properties, our liabilities and our message to the loved one. A will is not necessarily about distributing our properties.
For the disadvantaged in the society, like the young orphans, the society, which include the authorities, has the responsibility to ensure that their welfare is taken care of. The immediate family members, not only has the responsibility to provide for them, but they also have the trust to protect the properties of the orphans.
Prof Farid Sufian Shuaib, the Dean of AIKOL, welcomes the initiative of the Law Property Research Unit in conducting such legal awareness programmes for the benefit of the community. As an institution of higher learning, it is imperative that the institution shares its expertise with the community particularly in this trying times.
