Brief introduction

The B.Econ program is designed to impart knowledge and develop the skills required to produce ethical professionals in the fast-growing field of Economics.  The program promotes critical and analytical thinking, decision making and problem-solving skills through teaching and learning. The methods of teaching and learning include the use of modern technology, case studies, industrial visits, professional/guest lecturers and practical training. Islamic economics and finance are niche areas.   The program offers specializations in Islamic Economics, International Economics, Development and Finance in addition to minor packages in Fiqh and Usul Fiqh, and Quran and Sunnah Studies.  The faculties are highly qualified and experienced staff of diverse backgrounds and specializations.

At the end of the program, B.Econ graduates will be able to:

B.Econ prepares you to work in:   Ministries and Government Agencies Financial Institutions (e.g., Central Banks, Conventional Commercial Banks, Islamic Commercial Banks, Merchant Banks, Investment Banks, Insurance and Takaful, Capital Markets, Asset Management, Securities Commission, and the Securities Industry) Zakat and Wakaf Agencies Consultancy Firms Universities International Agencies (e.g., World Bank, Asian Development Bank, UNESCO, UN) Corporations and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) Private sectors The jobs listed above are not exhaustive; remember that many employers accept applications from good graduates with any degree subject.

Program Structure

In your first year of study you will register for common University required and Kulliyyah required courses. These courses are designed to develop your worldview of the University’s philosophy and mission, the Kulliyyahs objectives, and your foundational skills for economics.  The courses you will study at this stage relate to Islamic worldview, co-curricular activities, soft skills and principle courses in economics, finance, management, accounting and information technology. At the conclusion of your first year, you will be ready to enter the department after having passed two principle economic courses; micro and macro.

From the second year onwards, you will progressively take intermediate and advanced courses leading to your specialization in year four. These courses will develop your in-depth understanding of the knowledge, techniques, tools and resources appropriate for economics and the related areas.

The total credit hours for Bachelor of economics are 130. Students have a maximum of four years to complete this course.
